Induction Week 2019
30.09.19 - 06.10.19
Freshers’ week is difficult for everyone, moving to a new place with people you have never met before but this is your first chance to get to know people who you will spend the next 3 years of your life with. The Freps will around college to help you settle in and to hopefully ease some of those nerves and to welcome you to your new home. There will be a wide range of events on during this week to hopefully meet the needs of all our new students to allow everyone to settle in at their own pace. You will spend sometime with your academic department during this week where you will have your induction and they will explain how your course will be run during the year.
Matriculation is a ceremony held annually by the University to formally welcome all incoming students. It is also described as “the act of placing a student's name upon the matricula or roll of members of the University.” Matriculation for incoming students of 2019 will be held on October 2nd, Wednesday, 2019 at the Durham Cathedral. For matriculation, students are advised to dress smartly, and to either wear a Stephenson college scarf or tie (free for JCR members, £12.50 for non-JCR members).
Your Events Director & His Assistant, Jeff & Rolake, have a packed Fresher's Week planned. This will include in-house and external events, which we will all do together. You will be getting more information about what’s going on for Fresher's Week soon! It honestly will be such an amazing week, packed full of every type of activity you can imagine, so get excited! (Events Calendar coming soon!)
A Letter from Josh, JCR President:
Dear new Stevo Rangers,
First, congratulations for not only getting an offer from one of the most prestigious universities in the world, but also making it into this incredible college. Make no mistake, you have been exceptionally lucky to be admitted to our Stevo family and you have clearly worked super hard to receive such an offer. In return, we hope that Stevo will offer you the best years of your life and a unique opportunity to flourish. I cannot emphasise enough how special your experience of university life will be here in Durham. By the end of your first term, you will know first, second, third and fourth years studying almost every degree in a community like no other. Our bar is entirely student run, the majority of students play at least two college sports and all our major music and social events are organised and managed by students. The information in this website provides you with all the relevant information for your arrival and everything else you may need for the rest of the year. That said, we hope to have covered everything you need to know but if you find that you have questions that you can’t find answers to, please do not hesitate to contact myself, any other member of the Executive Committee.
There’s also the ‘Stephenson College Freshers 19/20!’ Facebook Group for discovering who will be in your year and to ask any further questions. We understand this whole experience is probably daunting. But, don’t forget: we’re students (only a few years older than yourself!) and we’re here to help and we want to make your transition from school to College utterly seamless. The atmosphere in the car, driving up to Durham for the first time, was tense to say the least, but I look back and wonder why I was so nervous. I felt at home from the very first week, and I hope you will also. We have a full schedule of events lined up for Freshers’ Week, and I hope that you are looking forward to it as much as we are. On behalf of the Executive Committee, the Freshers’ Reps and the JCR, I wish you a great rest of summer and I am looking forward to meeting you all in September!
Josh Crawshaw (Stephenson JCR President)
A Message from Jeffrey, JCR Events Director:
Hi I’m Jeff, your Events Director for the upcoming academic year. A major perk of the collegiate system at Durham is that the student led JCR decides the type of events we put on, so this year’s itinerary is a combination of the great stuff we’ve had in the past and the fresh ideas & suggestions that have come in from students.
Fresher's week was my personal highlight of first year, and we’ve got some fantastic in-house & external events planned. Then throughout Term’s 1 & 2, there will be something for everyone, with events ranging from adventure/ sport based events like bubble football, paint balling and go karting, to seasonal events like ice skating, visits to Christmas markets and Oktoberfest, to Stevo on Tour nightclub trips to nearby cities Newcastle & Leeds.
You’ll be busy with exams as the start of Term 3 but we’ll more than make up for that time off in Re-fresher's week, which will conclude the year. Remember it’s your JCR, so come along to Events Committee or catch me for a chat to propose any ideas you may have for future events. Enjoy the rest of your summer & I look forward to meeting you all in September!
