JCR Balls at Stephenson College

The Balls at Stephenson are the biggest events in the college calendar and everyone’s favourite nights! We typically host two Balls, Winter Ball that takes place before Christmas, and Summer Ball after exams in June for students in all years across Stephenson. These events are black-tie dinners at beautiful venues around Durham, with live entertainment, music, and photographers. They are always themed with gorgeous décor and the Ball Chair and their committee work for months in advance to put on amazing events for the whole college to enjoy. They are not events to miss! Read on to find out more about our Winter and Summer Balls, or check us out on @stephensoncollegeball.

Winter ball

Winter Ball is the first large event in the social calendar, taking place in the last week of Michaelmas term. With over 500 attendees, it is one of the most well-attended events that we host! It takes place at an external venue in Durham, and consists of a drinks reception and a 3-course meal. Entertainment runs all evening, with dancers, live bands, and of course a DJ and dancefloor! A professional photographer and videographer capture the night so you can look back on happy memories! These events are always themed, with ‘A Night at the Nutcracker’ and ‘The Roaring Twenties’ making appearances in previous years. It’s a great way to celebrate the end of term with friends, and meet new people across all-year groups. Whether you’re a returner or a new face to college, everyone has an amazing evening.

Summer Ball

One of the biggest events on the calendar, Stephenson JCR’s Summer Ball is definitely not one to miss. As well as a drinks reception and a 3-course meal, Summer Ball offers fairground rides, an outdoor stage, and even fireworks. Live music comes from both our very own Stephenson students and other student bands across the university, with the potential to spot some famous faces performing for our students as well. It takes place after exams when everyone is relaxed and the sun is shining (hopefully!). As with Winter Ball, it is held in some of Durham’s most beautiful events venues and is the most sought-after event in the year, with over 500 attendees from college. It is the perfect way to celebrate the end of the academic year with everyone! The 2023 theme was ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
