Sports Teams at Stevo

At Stevo we have a large variety of sports teams for you to join and enjoy! Joining a sports team is a great way to meet new people, keep fit, and join a friendly and vibrant community. Whether you’re a veritable pro or just trying something new, sport at Stevo is the best place for it!

At Durham, sports teams are organised on both a collegiate and university level. Both types of teams compete, with college teams taking on other college teams, Durham University teams are more competitive, taking on other university teams around the country. If you want to find out more about Durham University sport, please visit Team Durham - Durham University.

BADMINTON

Stevo Badminton is a friendly and inclusive club for players of all abilities. We have multiple socials throughout the year (mostly bar crawls), which anyone is welcome to attend. We have teams who play at a good level but there are many who enjoy just hitting a shuttle around. No prior experience is required. We hope to have three training sessions per week, including at the nearby girls' school, Maiden Castle and Freeman’s Quay. We provide the shuttles for you. Please bring a racket if you have one, but don’t worry we have some spares.

We have 4 doubles teams (3 pairs each): Women's A, Men's, A, Mixed A and Mixed B. All our teams are in the top division of college badminton, with the Woman's and Mixed A teams placing well last year.

BASKETBALL

Stevo Basketball is a relatively new team, having been formed in 2021, but we have quickly found success rising from division 3 to division 1 in college sport. We train mid-week in the indoor courts down at Maiden Castle, which mostly consists of friendly scrimmages. These are in preparation for our games against other colleges on Saturday evenings, where we aim to gain promotion to the prem! We also aim to hold semi-regular sessions on the MUGA, which anyone can book out from reception and is a great place to practice. Although a relatively small team (we had around 10 regular players last year), we have a strong community and welcome anyone who has an interest in basketball.

MEN’S FOOTBALL

Stevo football is a friendly, fun football club competing at many different levels, encouraging all levels of ability. Stevo offers 5 different football teams with Stevo As competing in the Durham Uni Premier League. Each team has one training session and at least one game every week. All teams compete in the cup, with the A team participating in the mighty Floodlit Cup on Wednesday evenings, which makes for exciting viewing as we take on the best teams at Durham Uni. Football at Stevo is a great way to socialise with others in the college and fantastic wat of making new mates. Socials are also held which are always very enjoyable. MEN’S HOCKEY

Stevo Men’s Hockey is one of the college’s most competitive sports teams. After a strong first season in the premier league, the team is looking to consolidate our position this year. Given an impressive showing in the college cup last year; reaching the semi-final, a further aim will be to repeat this great performance. Despite the strong standard of college hockey, we are a very inclusive team, catering to all abilities. We have frequent matches with both league and cup fixtures throughout the year. Training is once a week at Maiden Castle and all team members are encouraged to get involved. We also have frequent socials both as a club and with other Stevo teams, which are great ways of meeting new people.

Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to join.

ROWING

Rowing at Stevo covers the whole spectrum of abilities, anyone can join from complete novice to experience rower. The vast majority of new joiners have no experience in this sport at all so it’s a very welcoming and friendly environment. It’s a sport that usually requires training at least twice a week at college level, so you get to know your rowing cohort quickly. Because of this it is also a very social club, it has some of the most frequent and attended socials in the college.

If you are a more experienced rower this is also the right college to join. The men’s squad has been established as one of the fastest colleges at Durham. And the growing women’s squad have been quickly improving and looking for another impressive season to get under the clubs belt.

FUTSAL

Stevo men's futsal is a fun and laid-back sports club. Futsal is an indoor 5-aside game of football, with most rules working the same as they do in normal football (you can check out more about the game itself here). Futsal is a great way of developing your skills for 11-aside football - with the smaller pitch and with fewer players your 1v1 skills and your first touch will definitely be put to the test! The majority of our team from last year played for Stevo football as well, so it's definitely possible to play both sports. Last year we finished 2nd in our league to Van Mildert so we will be aiming to go one better this year!

MIXED LACROSSE

Stevo Mixed Lacrosse is a diverse and welcoming sports team full of people looking to get stuck in and have some fun. We welcome people of all abilities right from those who have never even heard of the sport to experienced players who want to help us retain the winning streak we’ve worked so hard to achieve over the past 3 years.

Through our fun and relaxed weekly training sessions, we compete in the college league; friendly matches and tournaments against teams from other Durham colleges.

All our members look out for their teammates and makes an effort to ensure the smooth running of the club, and each member of the exec is responsible for something different, be it finances, logistics, socials, or morale. We can’t wait to get back onto the pitch next year and meet all our new members. If you have any questions about playing lacrosse at Stevo, please get in touch with Pat.

CRICKET

Whether you simply love the sport or are just wanting to meet new people from the college, the Stevo cricket club is a fantastic team to be a part of. We compete in two formats: an indoor 6-a-side league and outdoor 11-a-side T20 league, meaning our schedule is jam-packed! Training takes place once a week at Maiden Castle, where we make use of the fantastic indoor facilities.

Last season was another great year, retaining our position in the indoor premier league, and narrowly missing out on a final's day spot in the outdoor league. We hope to build on these successes this coming year.

The team regularly meets up off the pitch and new players of all abilities are welcomed with open arms. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions or would like to join and we hope to see you out on the field for Stevo soon.

P.S Training will begin as soon as possible so don't forget to bring any cricket gear you have to Durham with you!

PHEONIX CHEER

We are a joint squad with John Snow College. This club is an incredibly friendly community, and we believe strongly that anyone can be a cheerleader, regardless of gender, body type, or any of the other stereotypes you might have heard about our sport.

Our sport does two types of cheer - main routine (focused on stunts) and poms (mainly dance focus), within the club you have the option to do both or just one of them.  We perform at sporting events throughout the year, supporting the other college sports teams, and we have one competition against other DU colleges in March. Last year we were lucky enough to perform at varsities, fashion shows, college days and charity showcases.

Phoenix cheer typically enters 3 different categories at intercollegiate competition, where all college cheer teams come together and showcase their different routines. The first category is Main Routine. This team usually trains for 2 x 2 hours sessions a week, and is the largest of our teams, consisting of about 25 people; this can be a mixture of boys or girls. The next category is “Poms”. The Pom team is usually up to 12-20 people and trains for 2 x 2 hour session a week. Finally, we enter a “stunt group”. This is a group of 5 people that perform a series of technically difficult stunts in sequence. The stunt group is specially selected and trains 1 x 2 hour sessions from the end of 1st term.

We are very proud of the numerous titles we have won as a team. These include:

  • All Girl Main Routine Champions 2022/23

  • All Girl Stunt Group Champions 2022/23

  • Pom Champions 2022

  • Durham Intercollegiate Grand Champions 2022

You do not have to have any experience in cheer, dance or anything else to join us!  We would love you to come along and give it a go, we can't wait to meet you!

MEN’S RUGBY

Hi everyone, my name is Keelan and I am your rugby club captain for this year. Our rugby club has joined with Butler forming a joint team we call Mound RFC. We are a casual rugby club that train once a week with an optional touch session each week. Games are played sporadically within Division 1 league throughout the year and in the Floodlit Cup in the Easter term. On the pitch we aim to be competitive, however, it is important for us to be a social club that create a great community of friends as well as teammates. We have socials biweekly and plan a rugby tour each year in the summer. Being a student can be very busy and rugby can be a great way to blow off steam, however, even if playing doesn’t interest you or is too much we encourage social members in the club to come along to socials, support and be part of what has become a fantastic community of friends.

ROUNDERS

Stevo Rounders is a mixed social team, accepting of all everyone and abilities with the intention of being fun, a place to meet new friends and have some friendly competition with other colleges. We currently hold a great track record in the leagues and hope to build a regular team this year including games, socials and any welfare needs!

TENNIS

Stevo has two mixed tennis teams. We have training sessions throughout the year, both at Stevo and at Maiden Castle, and we will also run some socials. In the summer term we play matches against other colleges. Last year we were very successful, with our B team winning their league, and our A team winning the Festival of Sport tennis competition.

All abilities are welcome, and we do have some spare rackets available to borrow - but if you do have one to bring along that is ideal. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

VOLLEYBALL

We started this team in 2021/22 when we realised that Stevo didn’t have a volleyball team. Since the team’s inception, we have already become the champions of Division 2 in college volleyball with an unbeaten record. We are aiming for great things as we move up to Division 1. Nonetheless, we are an inclusive team with most of the members starting with no experience of volleyball. We welcome members from any skill level!

During Term 1, we have multiple training sessions with other colleges on Sundays from 9-11 am at Maiden Castle. Term 1 is mainly focused on skill-building and introducing beginners to volleyball. In Term 2, we have matches on Sundays with other colleges. We have multiple training sessions during the week: Saturday from 4-6 pm at Howlands with Josephine Butler, a slot is given to the team each week for training at MC subject to the availability of the court.

Aside from this, we have frequent socials (possibly with other college volleyball teams as well) to get to know everyone on the team! We also participate in the Deep Dish Volleyball Tour in Portugal over the Easter holidays to play beach volleyball! If you are interested, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
