Team Stevo - Societies
Over the last year, we’ve seen a number of societies grow and we anticipate the development of many more new societies in the future. There is sometimes a minimal membership fee, called ‘subs’, to cover venue and equipment costs. Stephenson College JCR encourages all types of activities to become established as societies and these are developed and run entirely by students.
If you have an interest and want to turn it into something more, then why not look into making it into a society. For example, last year students at Stephenson College established ‘Stephenson Union,’ ‘Open Forums’ and many more! So if you have a passion for something and a society for it does not already exist, please contact your Societies Officer, Mariam Ibrahim, for more information on Stephenson.email@example.com.

The Stephenson Union is a college version of the Durham Union – we aim to foster the art of oral advocacy and the ability to think on your feet. We will be hosting various events throughout the year – inviting speakers in for talks, hosting panels, workshops on how to improve your advocacy skills and debating competitions to put the theory into practice!

We are a joint society for Stephenson College and Butler College. We meet weekly at Howlands to study the Bible, pray, develop friendships, and encourage one other. No matter your beliefs, come along and join us to hear the gospel, discover the claims of the Christian faith and think through its message for yourself! We are a society which is open for creative, open and informal debate around controversial issues and hot topics. This is a space to enhance oral reasoning and analysis, while providing a supportive safe space for any kinds of ideas or opinions. The objective is to foster productive conversation. We’re getting rid the old debate format where you never really hear your opponent or gain anything because you’re talking at and not to each other. Open forum is about sharing, developing and challenging your opinions.
