Sports and Societies at Stephenson

Freshers Fair

We recognise that for many students, joining a sports team or a society is a big part of their time and experience at university. That is why Stephenson College is dedicated to supporting the efforts of students to get involved! The JCR helps by providing financial support and resources to our teams and societies, enabling them to have the facilities and equipment to perform their best.

A bit about societies…

Over the last year, we’ve seen a number of societies grow and we anticipate the development of many more new societies in the future. There is sometimes a membership fee, called ‘subs’, to cover venue and equipment costs. Stephenson College JCR encourages all types of activities to become established as societies and these are developed and run entirely by students.

You can have a look at the societies we currently have in the ‘Our Societies’ page!

If you have an interest and want to turn it into something more, then why not look into making it into a society. So if you have a passion for something and a society for it does not already exist, please contact your Societies Officer, Luca Sze, for more information on stephenson.jcr-societies@durham.ac.uk.

A bit about Sports…

College sport is an important part of your University experience and we, therefore, strive to have more and more students playing College sports, regardless of their ability.

To get involved with College sports you do not have to be a JCR member, however JCR members see benefits such as reduced-price subs for the year, as well as reduced membership fees for Howlands Gym. We are also lucky to have a dedicated Multi-Use Games Area on-site, which is available to be used by our sports teams for training and practice, as well as booked by all for social sports. Stevo sport provides you with an opportunity to develop your existing interests or to try something completely new.

Stevo really does provide you with a chance to try something completely new, or even just improve on what you are already good at. You can find the current Stephenson College JCR sports teams, captains and their contact details on the ‘Our Sports Teams’ page.

However, we’re aware that with a new cohort of students comes a new set of interests, so we’ve made it quick and easy to start a new sport! To find out more information about starting a new sport or if you have any questions regarding College sports please contact your Sports Officer, Eleanor Roberts, on stephenson.jcr-sport@durham.ac.uk.

Got an idea for a new team or society? SET ONE UP!

If you don’t see anything you like here or know something that you want to do and think others would enjoy it too – set it up yourself! We love involving as many people as we can as it expands the already massive family environment that makes Stevo tick!

To get starting with setting up a new sports team or society please fill out the form below and if you find yourself needing some help with it, please contact your Sports Officer, Eleanor Roberts, stephenson.jcr-sports@durham.ac.uk or Societies Officer, Luca Sze, on stephenson.jcr-societies@durham.ac.uk and they will be in contact with you.

The form will ask you a number of important questions about your plans and ambitions for the new team or society, so it is important for you to consider:

  1. Who is going to be on the Exec of this new team/society (President, Vice President and Treasurer)?

  2. What the aims and objectives of the team/society are?

  3. How much will subs cost to the new team/society, if anything? And how has this been calculated?

  4. Who are to be the six founding members of the team/society?
