JCR Elections

Our elections are an instrumental part of our status as a democratic community, and a great chance for our students to put themselves forwards to represent and serve their peers in an area they’re passionate about, whilst taking advantage of all the opportunities for development that that entails.

Here are a few things you need to know about our elections:

  • Our elections work on a single transferable vote system, allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference.

  • If you’re not happy with any of the candidates who put themselves forwards, you can vote to reopen nominations (RON), if RON gets a majority, nominations for candidates are reopened.

  • Any JCR member is eligible to vote in any of our elections.

  • Any JCR member is eligible to stand for election for any position, although some positions have specific criteria.

  • Election periods usually take place over a number of weeks, with time dedicated to nominations, prep, campaigning and voting.

  • In a typical year, we hold 2-3 elections per year, with the largest taking place in February-March, our General Election.

WHY WOULD YOU RUN?

Running for A JCR position enables you to have your say in the way the JCR is run. It enables you to have the biggest impact on your and your friends experience whilst at university. It’s a rewarding experience watching all your hard work pay off and your friends creating lasting memories for the rest of their lives.

HOW TO APPLY

Once you have decided that you want to run for a position you need two JCR members to propose you for the position, all they need to do is agree to sign the nominations form. Once you have this you need to write a manifesto of up to 250 words which briefly explains why you want to run for the position and why the JCR members should vote for you. These forms will be linked below prior to election season in February and March

Once this has been filled in you will have to do a hust or short speech at the next JCR meeting, this is really important as this is your opportunity to get as many JCR members on your side and is the time to share as many of your ideas as possible and why you would be best for the position.

Once everyone has done their husts voting will be open and will stay open for a week, the results of this will be announced at the next JCR meeting.
